Planetary migration and sources of dust in the β Pictoris disk

چکیده
The dust disk around β Pictoris must be produced by collision or by evaporation of orbiting Kuiper belt-like objects. Here we extend the already proposed Orbiting-EvaporatingBodies (OEB) scenario in which the disk is a gigantic multicometary tail supplied by slowly evaporating bodies like Chiron. We show that the number of these OEBs must be several tens of millions, and that this is consistent with the number of bodies needed to explain the presence of CO and C i in the gaseous disk. We explore some possible origin of the required perturbation on the OEBs. If dust is produced by evaporation, a planet with an eccentric orbit can explain the observed asymmetry of the disk, because the periastron distribution of the parent bodies are then expected to be non-axisymmetric. Following Malhotra (1995), we investigate the consequence for the Kuiper belt-like objects of the formation and the migration of an outer planet like Neptune in Fernández’s scheme (Fernández 1982). We find that bodies trapped in resonance with a migrating planet can significantly evaporate, producing a β Pictoris-like disk with similar characteristics like opening angle and asymmetry. We thus show that the β Pictoris disk can be a transient phenomenon. The circumstellar disks around main sequence stars can be the signature of the present formation and migration of outer planets.

Dust distribution in disks supplied by small bodies: Is the β Pictoris disk a gigantic multi-cometary tail? Abstract. We have evaluated the spatial distribution of dust in disks supplied by colliding or evaporating bodies spread in a small belt. The gradient of the distribution of dust expelled by radiation pressure is generally steeper than the one observed around β Pictoris. It follows that, ...
متن کاملCO in the circumstellar disks of Vega and β Pictoris
Vega and β Pictoris are the most prominent A stars surrounded by dust disks. However up to now CO radio observations have not revealed any gas in the circumstellar environment. We present thin hydrostatic equilibrium models for the disks around these stars using ATLAS9 photospheric models (Kurucz 1992) to determine the stellar UV flux and to derive the dust temperature from radiative equilibriu...
متن کاملThe Dust and Gas around Pictoris
We have obtained Spitzer IRS 5.5Y35 m spectroscopy of the debris disk around Pictoris. In addition to the 10 m silicate emission feature originally observed from the ground, we also detect the crystalline silicate emission bands at 28 and 33.5 m. This is the first time that the silicate bands at wavelengths longer than 10 mhave ever been seen in the Pictoris disk. The observed dust emission is ...
متن کاملBraking the Gas in the Β Pictoris Disk
Metallic gas detected in the β Pictoris circumstellar debris disk raises many questions. The origin of this gas is unclear and its very presence is difficult to explain: many constituents of the gas are expected to be radiatively accelerated outward, yet their motion appears to be consistent with Keplerian rotation out to at least 300 AU. Hydrogen has previously been hypothesized to exist in th...
متن کاملRadiation Induced Warping of Protostellar Accretion Disks
We examine the consequences of radiatively driven warping of accretion disks surrounding pre-main-sequence stars. These disks are stable against warping if the luminosity arises from a steady accretion flow, but are unstable at late times when the intrinsic luminosity of the star overwhelms that provided by the disk. Warps can be excited for stars with luminosities of around 10L⊙ or greater, wi...
